You ask to hire two regular bikes for Sunday. Only electric bikes are left, and they cost more. You need to ask another question, suggest an alternative and check the rental conditions. This is the kind of exchange to practise for the **DELF A2 interaction task**.

Below are 15 situations with instructions, the examiner’s role, a model dialogue and two prompts to keep the conversation going. The scenarios and answers are **original practice examples**, not official exam topics or predictions.

You can also [download the 15 printable role-play worksheets](/downloads/delf-a2-interaction-worksheets-en.pdf). Use them to assign roles without reading the model answers in advance.

## How the interaction task works

The DELF A2 tout public speaking exam lasts **6 to 8 minutes in total**. The interaction takes about **3 to 4 minutes**. Before the exam, you have **10 minutes to prepare both the monologue and the interaction**. For each of these two parts, you draw two topics and choose one. These instructions appear in the [official candidate document](https://www.france-education-international.fr/en/document/delf-a2-tp-candidat-ind).

During the interaction, the examiner plays a character: a friend, a shop assistant, an employee… You talk to that person to get information, arrange an activity or deal with an everyday situation. The [official sample tasks](https://www.france-education-international.fr/document/delf-a2-tout-public-poexercice-con) show the instructions used for this part of the exam.

**Use the dialogues as a starting point for 3 to 4 minutes of practice.** Reading them aloud may take less time. Add the follow-up prompts, ask for details and respond to changes your partner introduces, keeping your usual speaking pace.

For an overview of the whole exam, see our guide to the [DELF A2 speaking exam structure](/blog/en/delf-a2-speaking-structure-criteria).

## Choose a situation

| Ask for a service or information | Solve a small problem | Make plans with a friend |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [1. A swimming class](#dialogue-1) | [6. Reschedule an appointment](#dialogue-6) | [11. A picnic despite the rain](#dialogue-11) |
| [2. Hire a bike](#dialogue-2) | [7. Exchange a jumper](#dialogue-7) | [12. Plan a birthday](#dialogue-12) |
| [3. Join the library](#dialogue-3) | [8. Find a lost scarf](#dialogue-8) | [13. Help a friend move](#dialogue-13) |
| [4. Order a cake](#dialogue-4) | [9. A broken washing machine](#dialogue-9) | [14. Study together](#dialogue-14) |
| [5. Shop at the market](#dialogue-5) | [10. A mistake with an order](#dialogue-10) | [15. A day at the museum](#dialogue-15) |

## Make a few notes, then speak

During preparation, identify **who you are, who you are speaking to and what you need to achieve**. Note down useful words, three possible questions and an alternative if your first suggestion is turned down. The ten minutes cover both prepared tasks, so leave time for the monologue too.

For the bike rental dialogue, your notes might look like this:

> vélo dimanche / 2 personnes / prix ? retour quelle heure ? / pas disponible → samedi ? / casque / confirmer réservation

Keep your notes nearby and listen to your partner’s answer before asking your next question. If they offer a different date, first check whether you are free that day.

The [official explanation of the A2 assessment criteria](https://www.france-education-international.fr/document/explic-grille-po-a2) includes starting and ending an exchange, asking for or giving information, and making suggestions. Simple sentences, appropriate vocabulary and understandable pronunciation matter throughout the speaking exam. Having an accent does not prevent you from communicating.

## Useful phrases to adapt to the situation

Change the times, prices and places in these phrases to fit your situation.

| What you want to do | With an employee: « vous » | With a friend: « tu » |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Ask for information | Vous ouvrez à quelle heure ? | Tu es libre à quelle heure ? |
| Ask about a price | Combien coûte la journée ? | On a quel budget ? |
| Make a suggestion | Est-ce que je peux venir samedi ? | On peut se retrouver samedi ? |
| Explain a constraint | Je travaille jusqu’à 18 heures. | Je dois partir à midi. |
| Decline and suggest another option | C’est trop cher pour moi. Vous avez un autre modèle ? | Ça ne m’arrange pas. On peut y aller dimanche ? |
| Ask someone to repeat | Vous pouvez répéter, s’il vous plaît ? | Tu peux répéter ? |
| Check a detail | Vous avez dit 15 euros ou 50 euros ? | Tu as dit mardi ou jeudi ? |
| Confirm | Donc, je viens vendredi à 18 heures. | Alors, on se retrouve chez toi à midi. |
| End the conversation | Merci pour votre aide. Au revoir. | Merci ! À samedi. |

The level of formality depends on the character, even though an examiner is playing the role. In a scene with a friend, « Salut » and « tu » are appropriate. In a shop, you will generally start with « Bonjour » and use « vous ». Also follow any specific instructions in the task.

## Practise without reciting the dialogue

1. **Read only the instructions.** Your partner takes the role of the employee or friend and keeps the model dialogue out of your sight.
2. **Act out the scene once.** Aim to reach a specific outcome: an appointment, a booking or an agreement.
3. **Add a follow-up prompt.** Your partner changes a price, a time or someone’s availability. Listen before suggesting an alternative.
4. **Swap roles.** As the employee or friend, notice which details you need before you can answer.
5. **Try again with one detail changed.** For example, the bike costs €22 instead of €18, or you need to get home earlier.

If you are practising alone, record your turns after reading the other character’s line. Listen back: did you answer the question, and is your request clear? Check the model if you need a phrase. When possible, repeat the scene with a partner who can vary the replies.

After each scene, check the following:

- I started the conversation with an appropriate greeting.
- I explained my request or problem.
- I asked useful questions without waiting for the other person to do everything.
- I responded to their suggestions and explained at least one of my choices.
- I suggested another solution when needed.
- I confirmed the place, price, time or final decision.
- I ended the conversation.

This checklist is for reviewing your practice; it is not a scoring rubric. The [current official A2 speaking assessment grid](https://www.france-education-international.fr/document/grille-po-a2) separates the three tasks from the language criteria assessed across the whole speaking exam. Our guide to [DELF and TCF scoring rubrics](/blog/en/delf-tcf-speaking-scoring-grids-explained) explains how the grids are organised.

## FAQ

### How long is the DELF A2 interaction task?

The interaction lasts about 3 to 4 minutes. You have 10 minutes to prepare both the monologue and the interaction, not 10 minutes for each part.

### Are these official DELF A2 exam topics?

No. These are 15 original practice scenarios. The references link to official France Éducation international documents so you can check the exam format and assessment criteria.

### Should I memorise the answers?

Practise what you need to do: ask for information, suggest another option, explain a choice and confirm an agreement. Then change one detail in the scenario to check that you can respond without reciting.

### Can I ask the examiner to repeat something?

Yes. You can say: « Vous pouvez répéter, s’il vous plaît ? » or check a detail: « Vous avez dit mardi ou jeudi ? » Ask for repetition when you have not understood the answer or need to check a detail.
